Pediatric Urticaria
the child itchy acute skin redness & rash

Urticaria, also known as hives, is a common skin condition in children. It is characterized by raised, itchy bumps (wheals) on the skin. The bumps can be red, white, or skin-colored and can vary in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters. Urticaria can occur anywhere on the body and can last for minutes to hours.

The exact cause of urticaria in children is not always known, but it can be triggered by a variety of factors, including:

  • Allergies to foods, medications, or insect stings
  • Viral or bacterial infections
  • Stress
  • Exercise
  • Heat or cold
  • Sun exposure
  • Certain medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen

In some cases, the cause of urticaria in children is unknown.

Urticaria is usually not serious and goes away on its own within a few hours or days. However, in some cases, urticaria can be severe and persistent. This is called chronic urticaria.

Treatment for urticaria in children depends on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, over-the-counter antihistamines may be enough to relieve the symptoms. In more severe cases, prescription medications may be necessary.

Here are some tips for managing urticaria in children:

  • Avoid scratching the hives, as this can make them worse.
  • Apply a cold compress to the affected area.
  • Take an over-the-counter antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl).
  • Get enough rest.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.

If your child’s urticaria is severe or persistent, see a doctor. They may prescribe stronger medications or recommend other treatments.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind about pediatric urticaria:

  • It is more common in children than adults.
  • It is often triggered by viral infections, such as the common cold.
  • It is usually not a sign of a serious underlying condition.
  • There is no cure for urticaria, but it can be managed with medication and lifestyle changes.

If you are concerned about your child’s urticaria, talk to their doctor. They can help you determine the cause of the hives and recommend the best treatment.
