Biologic Allergy Treatments
Our clinic is the first clinic started the use of biologics which are a type of medication that is used to treat a variety of diseases, including eczema and urticaria. They work by targeting specific molecules in the body’s immune system. This can help to reduce inflammation and other symptoms of the disease.
There are a few different biologics that are approved for use in pediatric eczema and urticaria. These include:
- Dupilumab (Dupixent) is a monoclonal antibody that targets the IL-4 and IL-13 pathways. It is approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in children as young as 6 months old.
- Xolair (omalizumab) is a biologic medication that is used to treat moderate to severe asthma, chronic hives (urticaria), and nasal polyps in adults and children 6 years of age and older. It is a monoclonal antibody that works by blocking immunoglobulin E (IgE), a protein that is involved in allergic reactions.
